Course Descriptions

Modern Technique I (Intermediate/Advanced Level)

Incorporating LMA/BF, Somatics, and a dynamically rich pallet of movement experiences designed to invigorate, inform, and inspire.  KT Warm-Ups will be a part of this experience. (Kista Tucker)

Modern Technique II
This course will be included if there are enough participants. (TBA)

Issues in Dance
Workshop participants will bring their own concerns to the course.  They can include physical participation and/or intellectual discussion.  The course can include concepts and details relating to choreography, but it can also include (though are not limited to) topics such as:  how to promote oneself; how to get a job; what are dance related kinds of work that actually pay a living wage; what does the term “professional” really mean; when should a dancer quit dancing; what are today’s trends; how can I get my leg higher; how do I determine my own range of motion; what kind of music is best for… ; the plight of the adjunct professor; what does it mean to collaborate; where is the best place for dance in the U.S., in Europe; why (for the most part) don’t women get the good jobs in dance; and more?

Lab
This course brings Laban Movement Analysis, Conditioning Principles, Pilates, and Somatics together to create individual conditioning programs.

Repertory
A work from the KTD, Inc. repertory will be reconstructed and taught to workshop participants. Or, an entirely new work will be created on a group of summer intensive participants. This work will be performed by Repertory course participants in the Saturday evening concert.

LMA/BF (Laban Movement Analysis/Bartenieff Fundamentals™)
Introductory theoretic principles of LMA and BF™ are offered with a practical application approach. Movement will be observed, analyzed, and if time permits, prescribed.  BF™ will be taught, practiced, and applied to movement used throughout the Intensive, within the KT Warm-Ups in particular. This course is taught by a Certified Movement Analyst.
Note: The LMA/BF™ Course will emphasize Bartenieff Fundamentals™. Bartenieff Fundamentals ™ and their component parts will be explained, explored, and applied to movement throughout the summer intensive.

"Intro to Bartenieff Fundamentals™” is taught by Kista Tucker (CMA, RSMT, BS, MA, MFA).

Ballet

This ballet class will be taught from a somatic approach. It will focus on the value of body/mind connectivity and how it can be applied to develop technical strength, increase anatomical awareness and enhance individual perfodrmance quality.

Faculty

Kista Tucker (MA, MFA, CMA, RSMT) has performed and presented her work via KTd, Inc. and as a solo artist throughout the US, Europe, Japan, Mexico, and Canada. She has a wide range of performance experiences, from a major role in Kurt Joost's The Green Table to Tucker's own Fractured. She received over $36,500.00 toward creating and touring a choreographic project based on the Korean War Veterans Memorial located in Washington, DC. Tucker is associated with the LIMS Management Committee and was elected to two terms on the CORD Board of Directors. She has taught at George Washington University in Washington, DC, The Ohio State University, Sam Houston State University, The University of South Florida, and SUNY College at Brockport. Tucker has presented her work for LIMS, IADMS, ISMETA, CORD, ACDFA, NDEO, and other organizations. She conducts workshops, acts in the capacity of Guest Artist within universities and other institutions, is currently working on publishing her KT Warm-Up project, and is looking forward to continuing her evening length David Lynch Project, Randolph County. Christine Cobb received her undergraduate dance degree from Illinois State University  and an  MA degree from The Ohio State University with an emphasis in choreography.  Ms. Cobb has been a guest faculty member teaching at Maryland Dance Festivals, Dance Teacher Magazine Summer Conferences along with her husband Thom, and at numerous state, regional, and national conferences.  She received a professional honor award from the Pennsylvania State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and an Outstanding Professional in Dance award from the Eastern District of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Association. She held faculty positions at Westminster College and Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania before becoming a tenured Associate Professor of Dance at Youngstown State University where she has been on the faculty since 1990.  In addition to teaching dance courses and serving as choreographer for the YSU musical theater productions, she directs and choreographs for the YSU Dance Ensemble and administrates Youngstown State’s newly revised dance minor program.

Thom Cobb is an Associate Professor and senior faculty member in the Department of
Dance at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania where he has taught since 1978.
His experience and expertise in teaching, performing and choreography have led
to numerous residencies and presentations at colleges and universities, public schools,
private studios and conferences and conventions. Well versed in several dance forms, including international dance forms, character, social dance and vernacular dance (Vintage Jazz Dance and Authentic dances of the 1920’s and 30’s), Thom currently focuses his work in the area of dance education at SRU and teaches Dance Fundamentals, Introduction to Dance, Creative Dance for Children, Society and Social Dance and Jazz dance technique. He is quite active in state, district and national dance associations and is invited to present numerous workshops and master classes throughout the United States every year including the prestigious Dance Teacher Magazine Summer Conference in New York City since 2003. Most recently Thom was received the “The 2007 College/University Dance Educator of the Year Award” from the National Dance Association of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and  “The 2008 Outstanding Dance Educator Award for Post-Secondary Education” from the National Dance Education Organization. Thom and his wife Christine, Associate Professor of Dance at Youngstown State University will celebrate their 35th anniversary in August 2009.

Sunday Homitz (LPT, BFA Dance) Ms. Homitz, was the former therapist for the Cleveland San Jose Ballet from 1988-1997.  She founded Body Technic Systems, Inc., 1997, an international physical therapy and performance arts clinic in Cleveland, OH. Her clinic, an International site for performance arts and clinical study, has hosted students from human movement science from the University of Queensland.   She is Certified in Pilates and conducts a Pilates Teachers Training School.  Additionally, Homitz is also a Certified Practitioner in Body-Mind Centering, a Certified instructor in Gyrotonics, and is Certified in Resistaball. Further training includes Upledger Craniosacral, Visceral Manipulation, and Neurmuscular, and Zero Balancing.  She has taught in the University of Akron Dance Department for ten years and has also taught at The Ohio State University. www.bodytechnic.com 

Tiffany Nirider (MFA) is a native of Lafayette, LA, where she received a B.A. in Mass Communication from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (summa cum laude). In 2004 she obtained the M.F.A. in dance from Sam Houston State University where she received many accolades and taught as adjunct faculty for five years.  Other adjunct faculty appointments include Lone Star College (LSC)-North Harris, LSC-Montgomery, and LSC-Kingwood where she is the co-founder and current co-advisor for the LSC-Kingwood Dance Ensemble.  Nirider has over 15 years of experience in teaching dance and has taught modern, ballet, jazz, tap, choreography, dance appreciation, dance performance, ballroom, acrobatics and aerobics in a variety of settings.  Among her performance credits, in addition to Kista Tucker Dance, Inc., is Chrysalis Dance Company (Houston, TX), the Raven Dance Project (Huntsville, TX), and Dancesation Entertainment (south Florida and southern California).  She has had the privilege of working with distinguished artists Michael and Susan Williams, Sam Watson, Bill Evans, Shapiro and Smith, Joy Kellman, Lisa Nicks and Sabrina Madison-Cannon among others.  As a choreographer, Nirider has set works in numerous settings ranging from concert dance to musical theatre.  Nirider’s passion remains in accessing and nurturing the authentic self through movement that is rooted in Laban theory and principle. 

Kirstin I. Riehl began her training in classical ballet in the Royal Academy of Dance Method. She continued her studies abroad at Bush Davies School of the Arts in East Grinstead, England. Upon moving back to the U.S she trained in New York City and later attended North Carolina School of the Arts, and the Houston Ballet Academy. Ms. Riehl has also trained in Modern, Improvisation, Laban Movement Analysis, Pilates, and Massage Therapy.  Ms. Riehl has performed in various roles in past productions; Alice in Wonderland, La Fille Ma Gardee, “Pas de Quatre Small Swans” in Swan Lake, Giselle, Carmen and the Nutcracker en tour with North Carolina School of the Arts, as well as two seasons with the Houston Ballets’ Nutcracker at the Wortham Center, Houston TX. Ms. Riehl performed in Road Home choreographed by Kista Tucker and performed at the East Texas Collaborative Dance Concert.

Concert

Participants are encouraged to send an audition DVD by June 8 of works they would like to have included in the concert.  DVD’s can be sent earlier so that participants can plan their own rehearsals prior to the KT’12SI.  There is no specific time limit for the work, but it would work best if the piece was no more than 10-12 minutes in duration.  Shorter is fine. We want to include as many dances as possible without making the concert too long.  Contact KTd, Inc. at admin@kistatucker.com if your work is longer than 12 min.

There is no audition fee.

Both KT’12SI Repertory classes will perform in this concert. 

Full-time participants can attend the concert for free.

Ticket price for non-full-time participants is $5.00
